Actor Bernard Hill Dead at 79

"His loss will be felt by all who knew him"

The British actor known for his roles in Titanic and The Lord of the Rings trilogy has died at the age of 79.

Bernard Hill, the British actor best known for his supporting roles in Titanic and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died aged 79, his agent has said.

Hill played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning film Titanic, and King Théoden in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He also starred in films such as Gandhi, The Bounty, and Excalibur.

Hill's agent said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Bernard Hill, who passed away peacefully at his home in Suffolk on Sunday, June 20, 2023. He was 79 years old."

"Bernard was a wonderful actor and a great friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Hill's death comes just a few months after the death of his Lord of the Rings co-star, Christopher Lee.

Tributes have been paid to Hill from across the film industry.

Peter Jackson, who directed Hill in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, said: "Bernard was a wonderful actor and a true gentleman. He was a joy to work with and he will be deeply missed."

James Cameron, who directed Hill in Titanic, said: "Bernard was a great actor and a good friend. He will be missed by all who knew him."
